Cabelas Grand Opening Springfield, Oregon

Cabela's Grand Opening

There is now a Cabela’s in Springfield, Oregon and Tasty-Takes was at the Grand Opening.  There were long lines, a bow and arrow ribbon cutting, and prizes to be won.  It took over 40 minutes to get the crowd of over a thousand into the store. The mounts and design of the store were great. It was hard to enjoy the shopping since there were a lot of people.  From KZEI, who covered the event, “it was elbow-to-elbow shopping with sales far exceeding expectations.”  For more on this story click here.

Another Taimen Video Plus Some Info About Them

Here is a nice Mikey Wier video that has some good footage starting around the 2:45 mark and a nice big Taimen at the end. I realized after posting the previous videos that a lot of people have never heard of Taimen and don’t understand the danger they are in. I found a great National Geographic article that gives you background information on Taimen and the dangers they are facing. “A ferocious and even cannibalistic predator, Taimen can grow more than six feet (up to two meters) in length and can weigh up to 200 pounds (91 kilograms). But like many other freshwater giants around the world, the Taimen is now threatened with extinction. ” These beautiful beasts are disappearing in Russia and China; Mongolia is their last stronghold. River Brew Review: New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale

Location: Fly Tying Bench
Beer: New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale

This weekend we are heading out for a big weekend of bull trouting and we needed flies. Lots and lots of flies. That means that we had to spend some time at the fly tying bench.

Mirco mayflies, midges, pheasant tails, gigantic ridiculous streamers, we tied them all. And to put in that huge tying sesh we needed a bit of refreshment. Nothing goes with a long night behind the vise like New Belgium’s Fat Tire Amber Ale.

Don’t Like Asian Carp? Neither Do These Guys

You might have seen this already but I have to post it, it is too good to pass up. I don’t recommend trying this and especially don’t recommend water-skiing with a samurai sword. Makes for a pretty entertaining video though.

Bait Blitz! These Always Get My Heart Pumping

I can’t help it, whenever I watch bait getting nailed on the surface my heart starts racing. This isn’t the best video but it doesn’t matter, when they are cruising up to the fish I start getting that feeling of excitement. Some of the most exciting fishing I have done is during a blitz; where you throw something into the middle of the hot action and hope for the best.

Rare Pink Fish With “Hands” Found to Be a New Species

Fish With Hands

Do you think it would give me a high five after I catch it?  Or maybe a firm handshake?

This rare pink fish uses its “hands” to walk rather than swim.  Nine fish with “hands” have recently been found to be a new species.  They are extremely rare and no one has seen a living pink hand fish since 1999.  To read more on this fish at National Geographic click here.

Do you think it could Thumb Wrestle?

New Belgium Introduces 3 New Beers

Somersault Ale

Cru's

New Belgium has officially introduced their new summer seasonal, Somersault Ale, and two new Lips of Faith beers, Super Cru and Abbey Grand Cru.  They understand that some people might miss Skinny Dip but they think that once you taste Somersault you won’t miss it for long.  Somersault has a slightly citrus aroma, there is an apricot sweetness, a little ginger snap, and some oats giving you the complete circle of taste.  Super Cru is a strong beer coming in at 10%abv and is in honor of New Belgium’s 20th year as a brewery.  It is spiced with asian pear and has a little bit of Fat Tire in it.  Abbey Grand Cru is a re-release of an older beer and in the words of New Belgium, “It is big and bold and makes you want to drink with your pinkies up.”  For more on these beer releases visit New Belgium’s Brewing Blog.
