River Brew Review: Redhook Brewery’s Long Hammer IPA

Redhook Long Hammer IPA

Location: Sick Bri Guy’s Secret Spot
Beer: Redhook Long Hammer IPA

April in Vermont; Fishing season has finally begun after months of anticipation and opening day brings the warmest weather of the season. Of course in the Green Mountains, where ski season is winding down, this means lots of melt water. We are faced with off color, high rivers where the most reasonable expectation is to have a “nice day on the river.” Continue reading

Fun Fact: Beer Helps Hydrate You Better Than Water

This is every beer lover’s fantasy come true, beer is better than water for hydrating you after strenuous activity! This is especially important for you fisherman out there.  After you pull in that fish of a lifetime remember to hydrate properly, grab a beer.  You know what? It doesn’t even have to be after a fish of a lifetime, you can grab a beer anytime you are feeling parched – after rowing your boat, walking to the river, making a few casts, or even stepping on your trolling motor. Just remember – you need to hydrate.

The study was done by researchers at Granada University in Spain.  They noted that “the bubbles in beer can help quench thirst and the carbohydrates in the beverage can help make up for burned calories”.  Even more amazing is that beer has been recommended by a cardiologist to some professional sports teams. Just remember it’s not only fun to celebrate a catch with a beer – it’s healthy!!

So I Have Heard of Fishing for Bass and Carp on Golf Courses, Never Sharks!

The Carbrook Golf Club in Queensland, Australia gives a whole new meaning to the term “Water Hazard”. Trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to go looking for your golf balls in this pond – instead of holding carp, blue gills or largemouth bass this water hazard is filled with ten foot Bull Sharks. The water hazard, which borders several holes, holds over 30 Bull Sharks up to ten feet in length. The sharks are thought to have gotten into the lake during flooding in 1990 and the club has allowed them to stay. Their main food sources are chickens, other fish and of course the occasional caddy.

If you have ever poached a Golf Course to go fishing and have pics we would love to see them. Send them to Chris@Tasty-Takes.com.

River Brew Review: Washington Cask Beer Festival

An announcer gets things going.

Tasty-Takes Survives Cask Beer Festival!

This past weekend Chris, Joanna and I met up in Seattle to watch a little soccer and to check out the Washington Cask Beer Festival. The Cask Beer Festival features the most unique and innovative cask conditioned beers produced in the state of Washington each year.

Since we had already decided to watch a Seattle Sounder soccer game earlier in the day we bought tickets for the late session. This was our first year attending the festival and we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. I’ll tell you what we didn’t expect – a line of over 200 people at the door! We arrived around 6:15 and were blown away at the number of folks lining up to get in.

Lining up to get into the festival.

River Brew Review: Long Trail Ale Pollenator

I am not sure how loudly I want to make this statement because I know how temperamental Ol’ Mother Nature can be in New England, but “it looks like spring has finally arrived”. I awoke this morning to crisp spring temperatures and a brilliant blue New Hampshire sky. After squaring away a few morning activities, I decided it would be a great day to head out on a little scouting excursion to see what was happening in the streams and ponds of Horse Hill Nature Preserve.
