Cheeky Fly Fishing March Madness

Cheeky Fly Fishing March Madness: Road to the Final Fish

The guys over at Cheeky Fly Fishing put together an amazing tournament for a great cause.  March is the month of brackets and they made a tough one.  32 fish were selected to do battle and only one will be crowned champ.  The entry fee was a donation of $5 with all the proceeds going to The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Casting for Recovery, and Stripers Forever.  The contest is now battling through the final four with Tarpon vs. Rainbow Trout in the Western bracket and Bonefish vs. Steelhead in the Eastern bracket.  The voting is open to the public and you can vote here. Even though it is too late to enter the contest remember that these organizations can always use your help.  Check out their websites for more information.

A New Type of Fly Fishing Has Emerged

Talk about some pretty awesome bragging rights. Not only is it hard to catch Tarpon but catching one while snorkeling and with a fly rod, that is pretty awesome!

I would really like to try this someday, however, on that day I am gonna need floaties on my arms to make sure that I don’t drown. I was also thinking that maybe we should try this for other types of fish, like: Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow Trout, or even Northern Pike (no wetsuits allowed). That would be some extreme angling.

Shark Jumps into Fisherman’s Boat

Jesse Kreese and his buddies came back into shore with a unexpected guest, a large, 375 lbs Mako shark. They were out fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and found out that Jesse had a new talent–Shark Whispering. The large Mako decided that he liked Jesse so much that he jumped right into his boat. In all seriousness though, they were chumming for Red Snapper and this bad boy decided that he wanted to get airborne, check out the video below for more of the story.

They Must Have Been Using Some Good Chum.

Here are a couple pictures of the ordeal.

And the boat got a little banged up.

River Brew Review: W’11 KGB

Widmer Brothers W'11 KGB Russian Imperial Stout

Location: Fly Tying Bench

Beer: Widmer Brothers W’11 KGB Russian Imperial Stout

I like to drink beer when I tie flies. I think that most people do, but for me they really go hand in hand. The nice thing about tying flies is that most of the time you do it in the comfort of your own home. This allows for a bit more leeway in the beer consumption arena. Continue reading
